A Message From Our Chief Overseer - 2013 General Assembly
Not by Might, Nor by Power!
(Zechariah 4:6)

To the youth of the 2013 General Assembly:
Greetings:

My burden is for the youth of this church and this country. Unfortunately, the road to adulthood is yet fraught with the ills, wiles, and fiery darts of life. We adults narrowly escaped them during our trek to becoming “grown”. Fame, fortune, and the lure of parenting, all, while beckoning with promise, continue to carry their indomitable danger zones. The news media constantly remind us of our youth’s cry to adults for understanding and acceptance; but regrettably, their help is too often frail and capricious.

Scripture frequently relates youth with strength and vigor (for example, Ecclesiastes 11:9; Psalms 110:1-3; Lamentations 3:27; I John 2:14, and others). But young people are cautioned not to take these for granted (Ecclesiastes 11:10; 12:8). Because of your strength and vitality, many of the sins of life are committed during the period of your zest for life and living (Job 13:26; 20:11; Psalms 25:7; Jeremiah 31:19). It is no wonder then that God slightly regards the sins of youth (Psalms 25:7; Isaiah 54: 4-8), but constantly reminds you to be careful because all things will be accounted in the Judgment (Ecclesiastes 11:9, 10; 12: 13, 14). And since youth and old age are related (We were not born “old”.), what is done in youth will evidence itself in old age (Psalms 37:25; Ecclesiastes 12:1).

Our hope is in the Lord (II Chronicles 34: 1-3; Psalms 37:25; I Timothy 2:22; 4:12). He is the true Source of our strength. You can accomplish what is good in the sight of the Lord, not through your own strength and might, but rather through that with which the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost, empowers you. The choice is yours (Joshua 24:15).

Yours for faithful service,
Meharry H. Lewis, COS
