LEWIS, Luke David, Bishop. Luke David Lewis was born in Nashville, Tennessee on January 16, 1943 to Bishops Felix Early and Helen (Middleton) Lewis. He is the seventh of nine living children born to them. After leaving the city of Nashville as a young boy, he came to reside in West Palm Beach, Florida with his parents and other sisters and brothers and finished his latter years of education after attending the Lincoln High School in Riviera Beach, Florida. Luke David fulfilled his military obligations to the USA by serving in the US Army from 1965-1967. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he entered into the North Technological Institute where he attained a degree in carpentry and is now a journeyman-level carpenter. He is presently employed by the City of West Palm Beach. He entered its employ as a carpenter and subsequently received many letters of special commendation from the city for excellent and superb work done in the field of carpentry. Luke D. Lewis was the first black carpenter hired by the city. In 1983 he was promoted to carpenter supervisor. In 1990 he was promoted to building maintenance superintendent. As avocations, Luke Lewis delves into the fields of veterinary and also tonsorial sciences in which he has achieved noted success in both areas. Luke Lewis received the Holy Ghost in 1957 to the best of his knowledge, and was called into the ministry in 1969, one year following the death of Bishop F.E. Lewis. He was elevated to the eldership in 1978. From 1973 through 2003, he served as pastor of the Riviera Beach chapter of the Church of the Living God, the Pillar and Ground of the Truth, Inc. He was elevated to the position of bishop at the 1987 General Assembly in Nashville, Tennessee and currently serves as diocesan of the Greater Palm Beach Area Diocese (Diocese IV) and Assistant Chief Overseer of the church. The father of twelve, he is married to the former Linda Newton. Bishop Lewis is a dynamic preacher and he has a thorough knowledge of the Holy Bible, which he exhibits in every sermon that he preaches. His ability to accurately and clearly answer almost any question regarding the Bible is certainly a credit to all the members of his diocese.
